oi C0llcge Volume XLVIll No. 6 April 1989 The Future of Saint Mary's By Kelsea Parker President Jenkins wants to have the Saint Mary's campus iook lovelier and in better condition for next year and the years to come. He is also trying to make the campus more livable for the students and faculty. He has arrived at some deci sions about renovating the campus for this summer. According to President Jenkins, work will be done on the roofs of East and West Rock "so that we won't use duct tape" anymore. In addition to this exterior work on Smedes, he plans to paint the dorms and install new carpeting on its first floor and knock out the unnecessary wall be tween the study lounges on the ground floor. Penick and Holt will have their out side doors and windows painted. Appar ently, Cruikshank is in good condition be cause President Jenkins did not suggest any needed renovations for this dorm. Smedes will not only be in good shape next year, but also very liable, because of a recent decision. Only about two months ago. President Jenkins spoke to the col lage freshmen about having college sophomores live in Smedes next year. The high school students who lived there this year were quite perturbed to learn lhat they would be moved to another dorm next year, it should also be noted that only fifty percent of this year's college freshmen were in favor of inhabiting Smedes as sohomores. As a result. President Jenkins has proposed that Smedes should be a high school dorm again in the 1989-1990 school year. Future Plans President Jenkins is currently thinking about ways to have more parking area, f^ut still have large areas of lawn and trees On campus. He has noticed that people do not make use of the golf course near the Iannis courts, so this will be a good place for additional parking. He wants to see the infirmary replaced with parking lots. Jhere will also be more space for parking in what is now the circle drive in front of Smedes. President Jenkins is consider ing making a road that extends from the fi'Ont gate to Smedes so that the driver Can only see the beautiful building and ffaes. On either side of this road, he '^ants to make larger parking lots which '^ill be hidden from view by small, grass- oovered mounds. In essence, the future Parking areas will be located on the f^oundaries of the campus so that the area in between can be occupied by f^uildings and lawns. In order to have new buildings and i^wns in this middle section, our President '^ight propose some more changes. He 'iiay replace the infirmary, instead, with grass so that we can have an official soccer field. He wants to remove unused sidewalks for more lawn. Moreover, he is Contemplating the idea of putting new ooildings and/or grass in the place of our Pfesent music building and its adjoining Sravel parking lot. If these proposals are carried out, our campus will appear to be larger and much lovelier. This is so because we will see the large expanses of land rather than our present patchwork pattern of grass, then a building, and then parked cars. Having the parking lots hidden by berms, build ings, and vegetation will also contribute to this effect. Language Awards By Kelsea Parker On Thursday, April 20, Saint Mary's conducted an induction ceremony for students who had excelled in Spanish, French, and Latin. The high school stu dents who have studied French or Span ish were recognized by the French Na tional Honor Society and the Spanish Na tional Honor Society for their successes. In order to receive these awards, these students had to maintain a 3.5 G.P.A. in the language at Saint Mary's and a 3.25 cumulative G.P.A. here. In addition, they were required to have completed three semesters of the language and at least one semester of that language at Saint Mary's. . Summer Opportunities By Elizabeth Evans and Jennifer Mason If you have not decided what to do for the summer yet, here are a couple ideas. Summer travel opportunities are still available to places like Australia, Eng land, Ireland, Switzerland, and Russia. You can go for summer school courses or just for the fun of it! Many places such as Germany do not require that you know the language and give you the equivalence of two college years in German that might (Continued on page 4) SGA News By Renee DallaPozza The new SGA members for the 1989-90 school year are: President; Heather Moore Vice President: Barbara Bryant Sec/Treas.: Kim Sorrells Underclassman V.P.: Molly Hull J-Board; Anna Tilghman Vice Chair J-Board: Jennifer Jones Dorm Council Chair: Shelly Nuttall Underclassman Social Chair: Ashley Langley Social Chair: Mary Tyler Fore Day Student President: Carlyle Herbert The new SGA body has proposed an exciting way in which funds could be dis tributed next year. They have proposed that only the clubs which are open to all Saint Mary's students (i.e. Science Club, Photography Club, etc.) will be eligible to receive a grant from the SGA budget, if ne^ed and requested properly and if the activity will benefit the entire Saint Mary's community. The proposed plan has not been passed yet, but the Legislative body met on April 17, and voted on the issue.
